  3. only an illusion in a picture. 
  4. Although viewing pictures may 
  5. be an important part of 
  6. perception in everyday life, 
  7. perception of the world is far 
  8. more important. In this scene, 
  9. the extents that look different 
  10. in length would be different in 
  11. length in the world. We would 
  12. not describe that perception as 
  13. illusory, even though the 
  14. lengths between the images of 
  15. lines on the retina is equal. 
  16. Illusions must be defined as a 
  17. discrepancy between what is 
  18. perceived and what is 
  19. objectively present in the 
  20. world, not as a discrepancy 
  21. between what is in the retinal 
  22. image and what is present in 
  23. the world. However, as we have 
  24. already seen and will see in 
  25. subsequent chapters, 
  26. perception in daily life is shot 
  27. through with illusions, 
  28. including those of the 
  29. geometrical kind to be 
  30. addressed in this chapter. 
  31. Sometimes we are aware of 
  32. them, but more often we are 
  33. notΓÇöΓÇôfor the simple reason that
